Red Hook Summer (2012)
Rating: C-
Just finished watching Spike Lee’s Red Hook Summer on Netflix. Sad to say that it didn’t live up to my expectations. Actually really disappointed to see someone like Lee put out such an incomplete and slightly confusing film. Except for Clark Peters (The Wire) everyone’s acting was lacking something…mostly believability. I’m still not really sure what the real purpose of the movie is. Other Lee films have some type of message/theme embedded throughout but this one seems to lack one. Overall the film left me wondering what I had just watched. Is it a coming of age film or some examination of hypocrisy in the church? I wouldn’t stop anyone from watching it but be warned that you will end up left with more questions about the movie than you had prior to viewing it.
Red Hook Summer is available on Netflix and DVD/Blue-ray.
